Creta – Stavròs: il restauro come paesaggio

Stavròs è una località balneare a nord est della città di Chanià, ultima spiaggia a contatto con le massicce montagne della penisola Akrotiri. Nella parte rocciosa del fronte mare si trovano le cave di tufo che servirono alla costruzione delle mura della città di Chanià nel XVI secolo d.c.
In questo luogo, quasi deserto fino gli anni 60, il regista Mihalis Kakoyiannis ha girato l’ultima parte del film Zorba il greco. Da allora le poche case provvisorie costruite per il cast cinematografico, si sono moltiplicate e il luogo ora si presenta come un conglomerato di costruzioni per la maggior parte abusive, meta estiva degli abitanti dell’isola.
Il Workshop partendo dalle caratteristiche del territorio antecedenti all’edificazione massiva e incontrollata di Stavros, si pone l’obiettivo di ragionare sul progetto di restauro dell’abitato come progetto di paesaggio.

Kriti, l’isola più estesa della Grecia, è situata circa a 95 km dalle coste del Peloponneso e risulta lambita a nord dal mar Egeo e a sud dal mar Libico. L’isola si sviluppa per circa 8000 kmq, presentando una configurazione allungata dominata dai tre massicci montuosi di Lefká (2452 m.s.l.m.), dell’Ida (2456 m.s.l.m.) e del Diktí (2147 m.s.l.m.). Culla della civiltà minoica, Kriti è caratterizzata a sud da banchi rocciosi alti e frastagliati, mentre l’area settentrionale lascia spazio a coste ampie e pianeggianti, ove sorgono le principali città e i relativi porti, affacciati sul mar Egeo. I più importanti centri urbani dell’isola sono Iráklio – l’antica Candia– e Chania, anche nota come La Canea. Il nucleo più antico di quest’ultima, situato immediatamente ad ovest della penisola di Akrotiri, è sorto nel 1252 come porto commerciale e militare della Repubblica di Venezia. Occupata nei secoli dai Genovesi prima e dai Turchi poi, Chania è oggi la seconda città dell’isola di Kriti per numero di abitanti, oltre che importante centro attrattore di flussi turistici servito dall’aeroporto internazionale Ioannis Daskalogiannis.

Crete – Stavròs: landscape restoration

Stavròs is a seaside resort to the northeast of the city of Chania. It is the last beach of the Akrotitiri peninsula, located right next to massive rocks. On the rocky sea-front is located the sandstone quarry that served for the construction of the walls of the city of Chania in the 16th century.
The film director Michalis Kakogiannis chose this location for the last part of the film Zorba the Greek, when it was almost deserted. Since then, the small provisionary hamlets that where constructed for the film cast were multiplied and the site today is a settlement of mostly illegal houses, that serve as vacation homes for the islanders.
This Workshop, initiating from the characteristics of the land prior to modern development, aims to examine the possibility of a restoration of the built environment seen as landscape restoration.

Kriti, the largest island of Greece, is situated about 95 km from the coast of the Peloponnese and is lapped to the north by the Aegean Sea and to the south by the Libyan Sea. The island covers an area of about 8000 square kilometres, with an extended shape dominated by the three mountains of Lefká (2452 m.a.s.l.), Ida (2456 m.a.s.l.) and Diktí (2147 m.a.s.l.). Cradle of the Minoan civilisation, Kriti is characterised in the south by high and jagged rocky banks, while the northern area gives way to wide and flat coastlines, where stand the main cities and their ports, facing the Aegean Sea. The main urban centres of the island are Iráklio – ancient Heraklion – and Chania, also known as La Canea. The oldest part of Chania, located on the west side of the Akrotiri peninsula, was founded in 1252 as a commercial and military port of the Venetian Republic. Occupied over the centuries first by the Genoese and then by the Turks, Chania is today the second largest city on the island of Kriti in terms of population, as well as an important tourist attraction served by the Ioannis Daskalogiannis International Airport.
